A Conversation for Those Standing at the Intersection of Faith and Mental Health

From Convening to Collaboration

The Intersect initiative at Access Services supports people at the intersection of faith and mental health. One way we do this is through fostering collaboration between human service providers and faith communities. Fostering collaboration involves both connecting people we serve to faith communities and connecting congregations to community-based resources. Out of a desire to expand these collaborative efforts, the Montgomery County Multi-Faith Coalition has now become part of Intersect. Through this coalition, Intersect will convene people across multiple sectors of society for dialogue, resource sharing and collaboration for the common good.

It is difficult to partner with those whom we don’t know.

Therefore, creating intentional spaces like this one brings people together to tackle problems impacting us all, whether mental health struggles, substance use or suicide. To be certain, coalition members won’t agree all the time. However, as one of our coalition principles states, respect is different than agreement. In the days ahead, we’d love for you to consider joining our coalition or working with us to develop a similar work in your own community.

Looking for a way to help those in your community?

Intersect: Community Needs Facebook Group

This Facebook group functions as a care portal for faith communities who are looking to meet local needs in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. We will post needs specific to the individuals supported by Access Services. These may include needs for relational support, material resources, and/or monetary donations. We encourage you to share this page with your family and friends. While we started this page to provide concrete service opportunities to local faith communities, we encourage any community members who are interested in giving back to join!

Questions to Ponder

  1. What challenges in your congregation or community need a community-level response across sectors of society?
  2. What makes it difficult for you to be part of a multi-faith coalition?  What would you need to know in order to participate in such a coalition?

Do you have something to contribute or a question to ask?
